Scuba diving near Rethymno
Plakias is on the south coast of the Rethymno region, under an hour by car from Rethymno town. If you are staying anywhere in the region, this is where the clear water is.
Why drive south to dive
Rethymno town sits on the north coast, which takes the prevailing wind and swell. The south coast faces away from that weather, which is why the water around Plakias is usually calm and clear when the north is not.
Visibility here often runs past thirty metres. We dive three sites we know well, from the shore most days and by boat to the ones you cannot walk to.
